Tools and Utilities from Oracle Support
The Oracle Metalink contains several tools and utilities. Let's walk through some of these tools. These tools, combined
with the grid control, may make you wonder if you will need any additional third-party tools.
OSWATCHER
OSWATCHER (OSW) is an Oracle-provided set of collection scripts that collect various O/S-specific performance
metrics using utilities such as mpstat , iostat , netstat , vmstat , etc. available at the O/S level. Control is passed
from the main shell script ( OSWatcher.sh ) to individually spawned operating system data collector processes. These
sub-data collector processes collect specific data, timestamp the data collected, and append the data to the collector
output file. Depending on the O/S utility used and the type of data collected, data is stored in separate files in their
respective directories.
The tool is flexible in that it can be configured to collect data at predefined intervals. This allows for uniform
collection of data for various components of the server.
For the collection interval specified by the user, OSW captures about 60 data points before closing the file and
opening another data collection set. While the interval can be defined, the number of data points is always fixed at 60.
This means that each file will contain, at most, one hour of data. At the end of each hour, File Manager will wake up
and copy the current file to an archive location and then create a new file.
