In-Depth Information
Many hikers start the Paine Circuit by entering the park (by bus) at Laguna Amarga,
then hike for a few hours to Refugio and Camping Chileno. From there, the circuit con-
tinues counterclockwise, ending in Valle Francés and Los Cuernos.
Refugio Grey to Campamento Paso HIKING
( 4hr heading north, 2hr going south) Hikers might want to go left to right (west to east),
which means ascending Paso John Garner rather than slipping downhill.
Campamento Paso to
Campamento Los Perros HIKING
( 4hr) This route has plenty of mud and sometimes snow. Don't be confused by what
appears to be a campsite right after crossing Paso John Garner; keep going until you see
a shack.
Campamento Los Perros
to Campamento Lago Dickson HIKING
(
Around 4½hr) A relatively easy but windy stretch.
Campamento Lago Dickson to Campamento Serón HIKING
( 6hr) As the trail wraps around Lago Paine, winds can get fierce and the trails vague;
stay along the trail furthest away from the lake. On the way, Campamento Coiron has
been closed since the 2005 fire.
Campamento Serón to Laguna Amarga HIKING
( 4-5hr) You can end the hike with a chill-out night and a decent meal at Refugio Las
Torres.
Day Hikes
Walk from Guardería Lago Pehoé, on the main park highway, to Salto Grande , a power-
ful waterfall between Lago Nordenskjöld and Lago Pehoé. Another easy hour's walk
leads to Mirador Nordenskjöld OFFLINE MAP , an overlook with superb views. Or try
the more challenging but gorgeous four-hour trek to Lago Paine ; its northern shore is
accessible only from Laguna Azul, in the park's east.
Kayaking
A great way to get up close to glaciers, Big Foot Patagonia ( Click here ) leads three-hour
tours of the iceberg-strewn Lago Grey from the former Refugio Grey (CH$55,000), sev-
eral times daily in summer. It also offers multiday trips to Río Serrano.
