In-Depth Information
Most people trek the 'W' from right to left (east to west), starting at Laguna Amarga -
accessible by a twice-daily 2½-hour bus ride from Puerto Natales. But hiking west to east
- especially between Lago Pehoé and Valle Francés - provides superior views of Los
Cuernos. To start the W from the west, catch the catamaran across Lago Pehoe, then head
north along Lago Grey or Campamento Italiano, from which point excellent (and pack-
free) day hikes are possible. The segments listed offer some of the W's most memorable
walking opportunities.
The area between Lago Pehoé and Refugo Grey was primarily affected by the 2011
fire, with denuded landscapes where forests formerly stood. Volunteers have reforested
the area but restoration is still long in coming.
