A naval and maritime museum with historical exhibits
which include a fine account of the Chilean mission that rescued Sir Ernest Shackleton's
crew from Antarctica. The most imaginative display is a replica ship complete with
bridge, maps, charts and radio room.

Especially
influential in settling the region, the Salesian order collected outstanding ethnographic
artifacts; those here tout the mission's role as peacemakers between the Yaghan and Ona
and settlers.

Worthwhile day trips include tours to the
Seno Otway pingüinera
(penguin colony),
48km to the north. Tours (from CH$20,000) leave at 4pm daily October through March,
weather permitting.
The town's first settlements at Fuerte Bulnes and Puerto Hambre comprise

Torres del Paine tours are abundant from Punta Arenas, but the distance makes for a
very long day; it's best to organize transport from Puerto Natales.
If you have the time, a more atmospheric alternative to Seno Otway is the thriving Ma-
gellanic penguin colonies of
Monumento Natural Los Pingüinos
on Isla Magdalena.
Five-hour ferry tours (adult/child CH$28,000/14,000) land for an hour at the island and
depart the port on Tuesday through Sunday, December through February. Confirm times
