In-Depth Information
Public transportation only goes to the junction of RN37 and RN40, and hitchhiking is
a poor option (trailheads are far from the information center). If you're driving, carry
spare gas and tires.

Gobernador Gregores

Sleepy Gobernador Gregores is one of the better stops on RN40, with hotels and shops
offering a cheerful demeanor.
Gregores is 60km east of RN40 on RP25. It's the nearest town to Parque Nacional
Perito Moreno (still 200km west) and an ideal spot to get supplies and arrange transport-
ation. There's a very enthusiastic tourist office ( 491259; www.turismoengregores.com ;
Paseo 9 de Julio 610; 8am-2pm Mon-Fri) with comprehensive information on lodgings.
The National Parks Administration Office ( 491477; San Martín 882; 9am-4pm Mon-
Fri) can be helpful if you have plans to go to Parque Nacional Perito Moreno.
Seventy kilometers west of town via RP29, the waters of Lago Cardiel are well loved
by anglers for blue-ribbon salmon and rainbow trout fishing. From the junction to the
lake it's another 116km to Tres Lagos , where a jovial couple run a 24-hour YPF gas sta-
tion, then another 123km west to El Chaltén. At present, the route to Tres Lagos is the
last unpaved section of RN40 this far south.
Summer-only Camping Nuestra Señora del Valle ( 491398; gregorestur-
ismo@yahoo.com.ar) has showers, hot water and stone grills. Get a hot meal
(AR$60), including excellent homemade pasta, friendly conversation and firm beds, at
Cañadón León ( 491082; Roca 397; s/d/tr AR$260/360/390; ) , with 25 rooms that
are ample and spotless. Reserve ahead. It also rents cars and provides regional transfers.
A new bus terminal is under construction. Cerro San Lorenzo ( 491340; cnr San
Martín & Alberdi) buses leave for Puerto San Julián (AR$205, four hours) Monday to
Saturday at 4pm or 6pm - ask at the office for exact departure times. Taqsa/Marga (
02966-442003; Paralello 956) goes to Río Gallegos (AR$576, eight hours) daily.
Heading south on RN40, there are still 100 unpaved kilometers between Gobernador
Gregores and useful gas stop Tres Lagos, though paving is ongoing.
