paved RN25. Welsh for 'river meadow,' the town offers pastoral appeal, with wooden
waterwheels lining the irrigation canal, framed by rows of swaying poplars. The historic
center is full of brick buildings, including the 1880 Molino Harinero ( 0280-449-2290;
romanogi@infovia.com.ar; Maipú 61) with still-functioning flour mill machinery. It also has a
cafe-restaurant, La Molienda (mains AR$80) , serving handmade breads and pasta with
local wines and cheeses. Call owner Romano Giallatini for opening hours.

Área Natural Protegida Punta Tombo
Continental South America's largest penguin nesting ground, Área Natural Protegida
Punta Tombo (admission AR$78; 8am-6pm Sep-Apr) has a colony of more than half a
million Magellanic penguins and attracts many other birds, most notably king and rock
cormorants, giant petrels, kelp gulls, flightless steamer ducks and black oystercatchers. A
new management plan requires rangers to accompany visitors on rookery visits.
Trelew-based travel agencies run day-long tours but may cancel if bad weather makes
the unpaved roads impassable. If possible, come in the early morning to beat the crowds.
Most of the nesting areas in the 200-hectare reserve are fenced off: respect the limits and
remember that penguins can inflict serious bites.
The Centro Tombo ( 8am-6pm) is an interpretive visitor center. Guests and tours
park here and take a shuttle to the rookery. Shuttle frequency depends on demand, but it's
greater in the morning. There's a bar and confitería on-site, but it's best to bring a picnic
lunch.
Punta Tombo is 110km south of Trelew and 180km south of Puerto Madryn via well-
maintained gravel RP1 and a short southeast lateral. Motorists can proceed south to
Camarones via scenic but desolate Cabo Raso. If you can get a group together, it may be
worth renting a car in Trelew or Puerto Madryn to come here.

In the stiff competition for Patagonia's sleepiest coastal village, Camarones takes home
the gold. Don't diss its languorous state: if you've ever needed to run away, this is one
good option. Its empty beaches are conducive to strolling and townsfolk are masters of
the art of shooting the breeze. It is also the closest hub to the lesser-known Cabo Dos
