via RP13. There are several Mapuche communities nearby, including Puel, located
between Lago Aluminé and Lago Moquehue.
The village lies at the heart of the Pehuen region, named of course after the pehuén
(araucaria) trees that are so marvelously present. If you have a car, the Circuito Pehuenia
is a great drive; it's a four- to six-hour loop from Villa Pehuenia past Lago Moquehue,
Lago Ñorquinco, Lago Pulmarí and back around Lago Aluminé. Mali Viajes in Aluminé
offers scenic back-road tours along this route in summer, starting from Aluminé.

Volcán Batea Mahuida
VOLCANO
From the top of here (2010m) you can see eight volcanoes (from Lanín to the south to
Copahue to the north) in both Argentina and Chile. Inside Batea Mahuida is a small
crater lake. You drive nearly to the top (summer only) and then it's an easy two-hour
walk to the summit.

Volcán Batea
Mahuida is the location of this small Mapuche-operated ski park, which is little more
than a few snowy slopes with a T-bar and a Poma. If you're a Nordic skier, you're in bet-
ter luck - a circuit goes around the park, taking in awesome views of the volcano and
lakes.
