Information
The Lanín national park office in San Martín produces brochures on camping, hiking and
climbing in the park. Scattered throughout the park proper are several ranger stations, but
they usually lack printed materials. The national park's website
( www.parquenacionallanin.gov.ar ) is full of useful information.
EXCURSIONS TO PARQUE NACIONAL LANÍN
In summer, buses leave the terminal in Junín several times a day for destinations
within the national park, allowing you to hit the trails and camp in some beautiful
areas. The buses run three 'circuits' and charge AR$34 one way.
Lago Huechulafquen & Puerto Canoa (via RP61)
From Puerto Canoa, on the north shore of the lake, there are three worthwhile
hikes, including a 1½-hour round-trip walk to the Cascada del Saltillo and a seven-
hour round-trip hike to Cara Sur de Lanín (south face of Volcán Lanín). For the lat-
ter, park rangers require you set out by 11am. Ranger stations are at the entrance
to Huechulafquen and at Puerto Canoa. From Puerto Canoa, the boat Jose Julian (
02972-428029; www.catamaranjosejulian.com.ar ; AR$160) offers boat trips on the lake.
Buses depart Juniń's terminal twice in the morning (usually around 8am and 11am)
and once in the afternoon (around 4pm). Be sure to catch the last bus back unless
you plan to camp.
Circuito Tromen (via RN23 & RP60)
Buses depart twice daily to Lago Tromen , from where there is a 1½-hour round-
trip walk along the river, passing a fine araucaria forest and a lookout with fabulous
views of the lake. Another 45-minute walk takes you to the base of Volcán Lanín's
Cara Norte (north face). This is one departure point for the two- to three-day as-
cent of Lanín. Park rangers inspect equipment and test any climbers who plan to
go without a guide. To hire a guide, contact the tourist office in Junín. This is the ac-
cess point for the CAJA refugio(shelter) and two military-owned refugios. Lago
Tromen can also be reached by taking any bus that goes to Chile and getting off at
Tromen.
Circuito Curruhué (via RP62)
Buses depart once or twice daily for Lago Curruhué and Lago Epulafquen ; near
the latter is a trailhead that leads to the Termas de Lahuen-Có ( 02972-424709;
www.lahuenco.com ; s/d from AR$1240/1580) , about one hour's walking from the head.
