In-Depth Information
Villa Traful
0294 / POP 360 / ELEV 720M
This little village enjoys an almost achingly beautiful location surrounded by mountains
on the southern banks of Lago Traful. The place really packs out in January, February
and Easter, when booking accommodations three months in advance is advised. The rest
of the year, you may just have it to yourself. Depending on what you're into, November,
December, March and April are great times to be here.
Getting here is half the fun - Villa Traful is 80km north of Bariloche via unpaved
RP65.
Sights
Cascadas de Arroyo
Blanco & Coa Có WATERFALL, VIEWPOINT
These two waterfalls are a moderately easy, two-hour round-trip walk from town that can
be done without a guide. Walk uphill on the street running beside the guardaparque
(park ranger) office and follow the signs. From where the path forks at the open field it's
500m on the left to the 30m-high Coa Có. Return and take the other fork for 1km to the
smaller Cascadas de los Arroyos Blancos. Far more spectacular than the actual waterfalls
are the lookouts along the way, which give you a bird's-eye view of the forest, lake and
mountains beyond.
Lagunas las Mellizas LAKE, VIEWPOINT
Starting with a boat ride across the lake, this trek of moderate difficulty begins with a
2½-hour climb through cypress forests before reaching a lookout with views of the La-
gunas Azul and Verde (Blue and Green Lagoons). If you've still got the legs for it, ford-
ing a stream gets you to an area with a variety of well-preserved Tehuelche rock paint-
ings, dated at around 600 years old.
