AR$125-190, ski/snowboard rental AR$125/140) a small ski resort with a base elevation of
1000m.
Serious hikers head for the 2260m Cerro Piltriquitrón a granite ridge yielding panor-
amic views across the valley of the Río Azul to the Andean crest along the Chilean bor-
der. Midway up is the Bosque Tallado (Sculpture Forest) and the Club Andino's Refu-
gio Piltriquitrón (camping free, dm AR$50) . Beds here are outstanding value, but bring
your own sleeping bag. Moderately priced meals are available. From the refugio it's an-
other two hours to the summit. Water is abundant along most of the summit route, but
hikers should carry a canteen and bring lunch to enjoy at the top.
For more information on these and other hikes in the area and the various hikers' refu-
gios operating, contact the Club Andino Piltriquitrón in El Bolsón.
In Chubut province, 15km south of El Bolsón, the Parque Nacional Lago Puelo pro-
tects a windy, azure lake suitable for swimming, fishing, boating, hiking and camping.
By the waterfront the Juana de Arco ( 0294-449-8946; www.interpatagonia.com/
juanadearco ) takes passengers across the lake to Argentina's Pacific Ocean outlet at the
Chilean border (AR$180, three hours). Hardcore hikers can walk into Chile from here - a
tourist office at the dock has details.
Peuma Hue ( 0294-449-9372; www.peuma-hue.com.ar ; s/d from AR$320/460) is a
comfortable lakeside resort complex nestled between two rivers with great views of the
mighty Piltriquitrón mountain range. There are both free and fee campgrounds at the
park entrance, including Camping Lago Puelo ( 0294-449-9186; per person AR$45) .
Regular buses go to Lago Puelo from El Bolsón in summer, but there's reduced service
on Sunday and off-season.

Villa la Angostura
0294 / POP 11,100 / ELEV 850M
An upmarket resort town on the northwestern shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi, Villa la An-
gostura provides accommodations and services for nearby Cerro Bayo, a small but popu-
lar winter-sports center.
It's worthwhile stopping by in summer, too, for lake cruises and walks in the small but
incredibly diverse Parque Nacional Los Arrayanes (a small peninsula dangling some
12km into the lake), and because this is the southern starting point for the breathtaking
trip along the Ruta de los Siete Lagos.
