the mountain. The dry precordillera that surrounds the town is geologically distinct from
the Andes proper, and two fauna reserves, Payén and Laguna Llancancelo, are close by.
Caving is possible at Caverna de Las Brujas and Pozo de las Animas. The nearby Parque
Provincial Payunia is a 4500-sq-km reserve with the highest concentration of volcanic
cones in the world.
Due to Malargüe's remote location, it's a great spot for stargazing, and the

art complex featuring some freaky architecture and some reasonably entertaining audi-
ovisual presentations.
Activities
Several companies offer excellent 4WD and horseback-riding excursions, and if you
don't have a car, these are generally the best way to get into the surrounding mountains.
Possible day trips include Caverna de Las Brujas (AR$430 per person, which includes
AR$60 park entrance fee and obligatory guide), Los Molles and Las Leñas (AR$400)
and the marvelous Laguna Llancancelo and Malacara volcano (AR$430 plus AR$65
entry fee). One of the most exciting drives you might ever undertake is the 12-hour 4WD
tour through Parque Provincial Payunia (AR$550); be sure your tour stops at all the sites
- those that combine the visit with Laguna Llancancelo only visit half the sites in Pay-
unia.

Sleeping
Malargüe has abundant, reasonably priced accommodations. Prices quoted here are for
ski season (June 15 through to September 15) and drop by up to 40% the rest of the year.
Singles are nonexistent during ski season, when you'll likely be charged for however
many beds are in the room.

Malargüe's best hostel is a cozy affair, right on the plaza. Dorms are spacious and
spotless with private bathrooms, the living areas are warm and homey and there's a well-
stocked kitchen.
