( 0261-423-4200; www.hotelpalace.com.ar ; Av Las Heras 70; s/d AR$230/400; ) The
fading '70s charm of this large hotel is compensated for by its great, central location and
a few classy decorations left over from the good ol' days. Rooms are generously sized
and those at the front boast views out over the busy avenue.

( 0261-423-4219; www.plazaitalia.net ; Montevideo 685; r AR$684; ) This five-room
B&B is hard to beat when it comes to friendliness and delicious breakfasts. The house is
lovely, the owners (who speak English) are divine, and the living room is just right for

posed family home features slick design, comfortable common areas and small but well-
appointed rooms featuring minimalist decoration. It's about eight blocks west of the
Plaza Independencia.

Some of Mendoza's best restaurants, often with outdoor seating and lively young crowds,
are along Av Arístides Villanueva, the western extension of Av Colón. West of Plaza
Independencia, Av Sarmiento is lined with the city's most traditional, albeit touristy, par-
rillas (steak restaurants), while east of the plaza along the Sarmiento peatonal (pedestri-
an street), you'll find numerous sidewalk cafes with outdoor seating. The Sarmiento
cafes are required visiting for coffee. The renovated Mercado Central OFFLINE MAP

El Palenque ARGENTINE $
(Av Arístides Villanueva 287; mains AR$60-90; 11am-1am Mon-Sat) Don't miss this superb,
extremely popular restaurant styled after an old-time pulpería (tavern), where the house
wine is served in traditional pinguinos (white ceramic penguin-shaped pitchers). The
food and appetizers are outstanding, and the outside tables are always full and fun.
