THE CENTRAL SIERRAS
Nowhere near as visually spectacular as the nearby Andes, the Central Sierras more than
make up for it by being way more hospitable. The area is dotted with little towns that are
worth a quick visit or a longer stay, and is connected by an excellent road network with
frequent bus services.
From the hippie chic of paragliding capital La Cumbre to the over-the-top kitsch of
Villa Carlos Paz, you'd have to be one jaded traveler not to find something to your liking
here. Kicking back is easily done - the river-side village of Mina Clavero is a favorite, as
are the ex-Jesuit centers of Alta Gracia and Jesús María. Things get decidedly Germanic
down south, and the pedestrian-only La Cumbrecita is not to be missed for spaetzle (Ger-
man egg noodles), bush walks and swimming holes.
ESTANCIAS IN THE CENTRAL SIERRAS
From rustic little getaways to sprawling, atmospheric ranches, the Central Sierras
offer a small but excellent selection of estancias(ranches) .
Estancia La Estanzuela ( Click here ) Wonderfully preserved, set on lush grounds.
Estancia Las Verbenas ( Click here ) Set in a beautiful glade, it's a truly rustic ex-
perience.
La Ranchería de Santa Catalina ( Click here ) Spend the night in the old slave quar-
ters.
