Museo Arqueológico MUSEUM
(Lavalle 434; admission AR$5; 8am-8pm Mon-Fri) The standout exhibit is a vivid
3000-year-old fertility goddess figure, depicted with snakes for hair and in the act of giv-
ing birth. She's a product of the advanced San Francisco culture, which existed in Las
Yungas from about 1400 BC to 800 BC. There's also a selection of skulls with cranial
deformities (practiced for cosmetic reasons) and mummified bodies.

(Alvear 1152; 8am-11pm) Set up by and housed in the headquarters of an indi-
genous political organization, this rather charming museum tells the history, traditions
and mythology of indigenous Argentina in a series of rather entertaining dioramas. If you
can read Spanish, you'll find copious information here on these subjects.
