Quilla Huasi

;
Quintana de Niño 70; mains AR$30-60; 11.30am-3.30pm &
7.30-11.30pm Wed-Mon)
A cute little place with tasty versions of regional favorites like
hu-
mitas, tamales
and
locro
. Other unexpected things crop up, like osso buco that's been
stewed in local wine. Service is caring and excellent and there's appealing outdoor seat-
ing, too. Top value.
Heladería Miranda
ICE CREAM $
(Av General Güemes; cones AR$15-35; 1:30pm-midnight)
A frequent dilemma in Argentina
is whether to go for a rich red cabernet or a dry white torrontés
,
but it doesn't usually oc-
cur in ice-cream parlors. It does here: the Miranda's wine sorbets are Cafayate's pride
and joy, but other fresh fruit flavors, including a
tuna
(cactus-fruit) one, are also deli-
cious.
El Terruño
ARGENTINE $$$

; Av General Güemes 30; mains AR$60-95;
noon-3.30pm & 7.30pm-midnight; )
Plaza-side seating and polite service are backed up by
the food at this restaurant, which curiously has two menus, one of which is less tradition-
al, with dishes such as inventive seafood-based salads, and well-prepared mains, includ-
ing plenty of fish dishes. This is Cafayate's most reliable midrange option.
El Rancho
NORTHWEST ARGENTINE $$$
(

;
Toscano 4; mains AR$35-79; noon-3pm & 7.30pm-midnight or
1am)
A cut above the string of hit-and-miss places around the plaza, this has a short,
simple menu of local dishes, including
locro
and some good chicken plates. It's owned
by a bodega, so competition wines are overpriced. It appeals on winter nights, with a
crackling fire, and the nights when a blind guitarist plays unobtrusive
folklórica
.
