(Caseros 602; 6:30am-2am; ) In the race for the accolade of Salta's best plaza cafe,
this two-level corner spot wins by several lengths. It offers shady (in the afternoon)

sic some nights.
PEÑAS
Salta is famous Argentina-wide for its folklórica(folk music), far more national in
scope than tango. A peñais a bar or social club where people eat, drink and gather
to play and listen ,traditionally in the form of an impromptu jam session.
These days, the Salta peñais quite a touristy experience, a dinner-show with CD
sales and tour groups; nevertheless, it's a great deal of fun. Traditional fare is em-
panadas and red wine but most places offer a wider menu of meat and regional
dishes.
Peñaheartland is Calle Balcarce, between Alsina and the train station. There are
several here, along with other restaurants, bars and boliches(nightclubs) - it's
Salta's main nightlife zone.
Some are a lot better and more traditional than others. A couple of the best:
La Casona del Molino ( 434-2835; Luis Burela 1; mains AR$40-70; 9pm-5am Tue-
Sun) This former mansion, about 20 blocks west of Plaza 9 de Julio, is a Salta clas-
sic with several spacious rooms with performers who work around the tables
rather than on a stage. The food is of very good quality. Get there early-ish to guar-
antee a table. There's a AR$50 cover Thursday to Saturday.
La Vieja Estación OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 421-7727; Balcarce 885; cover
charge AR$50; 7pm-3am) The best established of the Balcarce peñas,with a stage,
wooden tables and a good atmosphere. Music starts at 10pm. Top empanadas and
other regional food (mains AR$40 to AR$85).
Shopping
An artisan's market sets up every Sunday along Balcarce, stretching a couple of blocks
south from the station.
