In-Depth Information
Most important: the falls aren't always visible; if the river is high, you're out of
luck. Ring ahead to find out. December to March is normally the best time to visit.
The falls are at the eastern edge of Misiones province, roughly equidistant from
Posadas and Puerto Iguazú. From Posadas, several daily buses leave for El Sober-
bio (four hours); from here it's 63km to the falls: there are three daily bus services.
There's also a daily bus from Puerto Iguazú directly to the falls (AR$165, four
hours), allowing you to see them on a long day trip from there.
At the end of the road, you cross the Río Yabotí (if it's high you won't be able to
go further) and arrive in the Parque Provincial Moconá
( www.parquesaltosmocona.com.ar ; RP 2; admission AR$50; 9am-5pm) . Here there's a visitor
center, walking trails with views of the falls, boat excursions to get you up close to
them (AR$120), and a restaurant.
Various operators, including most accommodations in the area, run boat trips to
the falls from points further away: these are recommended, as you get to see
Brazilian and Argentine jungle reserves on each side, an attraction in itself.
El Soberbio is an interesting place, a service center for a lush agricultural area
growing tobacco, citronella and manioc. There's a ferry crossing to Brazil, and
blond heads are everywhere, a legacy of German and Eastern European immig-
rants joining the indigenous Guaraní population. Ox carts are still widely used for
transport.
The several places to stay include spotless motel-style Hostal Del Centro (
03755-495133; cnr Rivadavia & San Martín; s/d AR$125/250; ) , right in the center of town
but built around a grassy courtyard; rooms are good for this price and there's a kit-
chen you can use.
Several upmarket jungly lodges, simple cabins and campsites are closer to the
falls. These include the following:
Refugio Moconá ( www.refugiomocona.com.ar ; RP2; tent/dm/d AR$100/120/350) Six
kilometers short of the falls, these are the closest accommodations and offer
pleasant grassy camping, simple rooms in a rustic wooden building and good
meals. Some impressive cabins with decks overlooking the river below are being
built. There are boat trips to the falls, ziplines, rappelling, kayaking and guided
walks available. Day use of the trails is AR$25.
Don Enrique Lodge ( 011-4732-3502; www.donenriquelodge.com.ar ; s/d AR$1100/
1720; ) Beautiful wooden bungalows in a very remote location with the river be-
low make for a romantic getaway. Delicious food and welcoming hosts seal the
deal. Rate is full board, with guided walks and other activities included. The turnoff
is 16km from El Soberbio, then it's another 16km up a rough road. Staff will take
you the last few kilometers in a pickup.
