In-Depth Information
El Nuevo Mesón ARGENTINE $
(Colón 587; mains AR$40-80; 11am-3pm & 7.30pm-midnight) Smartly turned out in black
and white - the waiters seem to be camouflaged - this offers really well-prepared dishes.
There's pizza, parrilla and more elaborate creations, but it's all fairly priced and very
tasty indeed. Grab a table outside if the weather's fine.
Information
There's no tourist office, but there are maps of town all over the town center. ATMs are
on the plaza and along Av Colón.
Libres Cambio (Av Colón 901; 8-11.50am & 3.30-5.50pm Mon-Fri) Changes money. There's
another branch at the international bridge that also opens on Saturday.
Getting There & Away
The bus terminal ( 425600) is 1km from the town center. There are services to
Buenos Aires (AR$300, eight to nine hours), Posadas (AR$176, five hours) and Corri-
entes (AR$152, five hours) via Mercedes (AR$42, three hours).
Buses to Uruguaiana (AR$3), Brazil, leave frequently from 7am onwards, stopping on
Av San Martín at Av Colón and across from the bus terminal (by the castlelike building).
The frontier is open 24 hours. Travelers report that you can transit to Uruguay without
requiring a Brazilian visa here, but don't bank on it.
Getting Around
Minibuses (AR$2) run from the corner below the bus terminal into town. A taxi to the
town center is AR$20.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
YAPEYÚ
It would be untruthful to call this delightfully peaceful place a one-horse town:
there are many horses, and the sound of their hooves thumping the reddish earth
in the evening is one of the nicest things about it. Yapeyú is a great spot to relax;
the sort of place where locals will greet you on the street.
