In-Depth Information
The tourist office ( 02291-420190; www.miramar.tur.ar ; cnr Calle 21 & Costanera;
8am-9pm) , located at the beach, has details about various activities around town, in-
cluding horseback riding, golfing and fishing. Miramar is known for its surf, more
easily accessible at the north end of town where there are a few surf schools.
For accommodations, consider Aventureiro Hostel ( 02291-430981;
www.aventureiro.com.ar ; Calle 16, No 1067; dm AR$120-175, r AR$300-390; ) , an average
hostel but just a couple of blocks from the beach; or the pleasant-enough Hotel
Danieli ( 02291-432366; www.hoteldanielimiramar.com.ar ; Calle 24, No 1114; d AR$480-600 Mar-
Dec, d incl obligatory half board AR$800-1100 Jan & Feb; ) . From Mar del Plata, buses
(AR$16, one hour) run regularly to Miramar's bus terminal at Av 40 and Calle 15,
within six blocks of the center.
Those looking for downright isolation can head to Mar de Sud , a small town 16km
south of Miramar. It's known for its rustic atmosphere, black-rock beach and fish-
ing waters - and claims some hotel ruins as a main tourist attraction. There are no
tall buildings here and much fewer services than its neighbor, so if you're looking to
get away from the crowds this should be your stop.
TOP OF CHAPTER
Necochea
02262 / POP 85,000
Totally pumping in summer and near dead in winter, Necochea's beach-town feel is un-
disturbed by the highrises that keep springing up. With nearly 70km of beachfront, it's
fairly certain that you'll find a spot to lay your towel. Windy Necochea lures surfers
year-round with its excellent waves. Other bonuses include walking and horseback riding
opportunities in foresty Parque Municipal Miguel Lillo, and some of the best-value
lodging on the coast.
Sights & Activities
The dense pine woods of Parque Provincial Miguel Lillo , a large greenbelt along the
beach, are widely used for cycling, horseback riding, walking and picnicking. Horses and
bikes can both be rented inside the park.
The Río Quequén Grande, rich in rainbow trout and mackerel, also allows for easy
rafting and kayaking, particularly around the falls at Saltos del Quequén . Local outfitter
Mundo Bonito (
15-658998; www.facebook.com/mundobonito ) organizes both river and
ocean kayak trips.
