Eating
Mar del Plata's numerous restaurants, pizzerias and snack bars often struggle to keep up
with impatient crowds between December and March, and there are always long lines.
For fresh seafood head south of town to the port, which has several restaurants cooking
up the catch of the day.
Taberna Baska SPANISH $$$
( 480-0209; 12 de Octubre 3301; mains AR$50-110; noon-3pm Tue-Sun, 8:30pm-midnight
Tue-Sat) Just inland from the port is this renowned Basque restaurant, running for over 50
years. Checkered tablecloths and dignified waiters give it an old-school atmosphere that
nicely complements terrific traditional dishes such as garlic shrimp, mixed seafood
stews, paella, pulpo (octopus), bacalao (cod) and fish in seven different sauces. For
dessert try the delicious natillas (egg custard topped with cinnamon sugar).
Sur SEAFOOD $$$

nautical-themed prints form a cozy backdrop for this seafood place, long popular for its
cordial service and fair prices. Specials all revolve around fish and shellfish, including
sorrentinos Sur (pasta pouches filled with shrimp and salmon) and whole fish cooked in
a variety of ways.
