In high season the municipal tourist office conducts free organized tours to
Mardel's port and museums as well as more unusual sights such as an
alfajor
or textile
factory. Reserve ahead at the main tourist office.
Festivals & Events
November. Launched in 1950, it's South America's most important film festival.
In January Mar del Plata also celebrates the
Fiesta Nacional de los Pescadores

, which features locals cooking up seafood
feasts, along with a traditional procession.
Another large celebration is February's
Fiesta Nacional del Mar
(National Sea Festiv-
al), which includes the election and coronation of a 'Sea Queen.'
Sleeping
Prices start climbing in November and December, peak in January and February, then
drop off in March. Reserve ahead in summer. In the off-season some accommodations
close their doors.
Mar del Plata's crowded campgrounds are mostly south of town; the tourist office
provides information about their facilities.

cool old Tudorlike building dating to 1929. Most of the four- to eight-bed wood-floor
dorms and one private room have nifty architectural details, balconies and/or partial sea
views. Other perks include a rooftop terrace with pergola, a guest kitchen, a basement
games/dining area and a 300-title video library.
