Tango Shows
Sensationalized tango shows aimed at tourists are common and impressive (though 'pur-
ists' don't consider them authentic). These usually include various tango couples, an or-
chestra and a couple of singers. They last about 1½ hours and come with a dinner option.
Nearly all of the shows require reservations, while some offer modest online discounts
and pick-up from your hotel.
Modest shows are more intimate and cost far less, but you won't get the theatrics, the
costume changes or the overall visual punch. For discount tickets to some shows, check
the carteleras . The website www.tangotix.com can help you choose the right show de-
pending on your needs; it also sells discounted tickets.
Some milongas (tango academies) occasionally put on affordable tango shows; check
out Confitería Ideal ( Click here ) , La Viruta ( Click here ) or Academia Nacional del
Tango OFFLINE MAP ( 4345-6967; www.anacdeltango.org.ar ) .
For free (or rather, donation) tango, head to San Telmo on a Sunday afternoon - or
sometimes other days. Dancers do their thing in the middle of Plaza Dorrego, though it
gets crowded. Another sure bet is weekends on El Caminito in La Boca.
Café de los Angelitos TANGO SHOW
( 4952-2320; www.cafedelosangelitos.com ; Av Rivadavia 2100; show from US$90, show & dinner
from US$130) Angelitos puts on one of the best shows in BA. It's tango - but also a bit
more. The performers dress in top-notch costumes and use interesting props, like drapes
and moving walls. They also dance to modern tunes like Bajofondo, and despite a
nightclub feel - especially due to the lighting - it's tastefully and creatively done.
Rojo Tango TANGO SHOW
( 4952-4111; www.rojotango.com ; Faena Hotel & Universe, Martha Salotti 445; show US$210, din-
ner & show US$290) This sexy performance is the tango show to top all others - especially
with its hefty price tag. Offering only 100 seats, the Faena's cabaret room is swathed in
blood-red curtains and gilded furniture. The show itself loosely follows the history of
tango, starting from its cabaret roots to the modern fusions of Ástor Piazzolla. The or-
chestra is first-rate, there are plenty of sexy period costumes and even a brief (shock!)
nudity scene. This is tango foreplay at its best.
