In-Depth Information
Bergoglio was a humble man who had eschewed the archbishop's palace in Olivos, re-
maining in his modest apartment and getting around Buenos Aires by bus and the Subte.
As pope he has continued such habits, emulating his namesake and personal hero, the
saint from Assisi who once renounced all worldly possessions. This humility, coupled
with the very personable humanity Francis displays, has made him an extremely popular
pontiff.
Oddly enough, one person who is at odds with Pope Francis is Cristina Kirchner. She
and her late husband NĂ©stor once considered the conservative Bergoglio a political arch-
rival who clashed with their liberal social views. Today, however, she's had to pull an
about-face and make peace with the world's most powerful religious leader.
