Museo del Indio y del Gaucho MUSEUM
(cnr Flores & Artigas; 10am-5pm Tue-Sat) Paying romantic tribute to Uruguay's
gauchos and indigenous peoples, this museum's collection includes stools made from
leather and cow bones, elegantly worked silver spurs and other accessories of rural life.
Festivals & Events
Fiesta de la Patria Gaucha GAUCHO FESTIVAL
( www.patriagaucha.com.uy ) In the first or second week of March, this colorful five-day fest-
ival attracts visitors from around the country to exhibitions of traditional gaucho skills,
music and other activities. It takes place in Parque 25 de Agosto, north of town.

unpretentious ranch-style home, 50km southwest of Tacuarembó, offers a first-hand look
at real gaucho life. Guests are invited to accompany Pedro and his friendly cattle dogs
around the 636-hectare working estancia on horseback, participate in daily work routines
and sip mate on the patio at sunset in anticipation of Nahir's tasty home cooking.
Call in advance for driving directions or to arrange pickup at Tacuarembó's bus station
(UR$1300 round-trip for a group of any size).
Hotel Plaza HOTEL $$$

decent night's sleep without breaking the bank, this is one of downtown Tacuarembó's
better options. Rooms are unexceptional, but breakfasts feature fresh-squeezed orange
juice, and the central location just off Plaza Colón can't be beat.
La Rueda PARRILLA $$$
(W Beltrán 251; dishes UR$130-280; noon-3pm & 8pm-midnight Mon-Sat, noon-4pm Sun) With
its thatched roof and walls covered with gaucho paraphernalia, this neighborhood par-
rilla is a perennial local favorite.
