“Yes, you were, and I was secretly glad you were jealous. It showed me that you cared, and
I liked that.”
We were silent now; she kept her hand on my shoulder and squeezed me suggestively. Her
hand roamed about my back slowly, and I shivered deliciously under the cover of my sleep-
ing bag. My arm went out and cupped her slender waist slowly. I heard her catch her breath,
and her breathing became a little heavier. Suddenly, we both knew what the other wanted
and needed. It was the perfect time. Herman lay several yards away snoring in the rattling
noise of the rain on the tin roof. We were both tired, but the promise of what we both craved
drove all tiredness out of our bodies.
“Do you want me to zip our bags together?”
“Yes, let's,” was her soft reply.
We lay together in the warmth of the down; the earth beneath us was hard and unyielding,
but for now we could easily tolerate it. We removed our clothing and lay together, our skin
tingling with the electric touch of each other.
The harsh sound of the rain drove out any tension between us, and she melted when I turned
to her and kissed her on her sweet lips. My free hand caressed and brushed her long, black,
slightly damp hair back, and I massaged her long neck. She seemed insatiable, and at the
end of it, we both fell asleep, exhausted.
We awoke together, and upon opening our eyes were both shocked and amused to see
a semicircle of young schoolchildren standing around us, looking down, smiling, and
laughing at the strange visitors in their schoolyard. We sat up embarrassed, clutching our
bedding to our naked bodies and noticed a school teacher making her way across the field
towards us.
I yelled to Herman, whose snores had the school children in gales of laughter, but they
were were quickly silenced by the stern look of the teacher. “What are you doing in our
school, please?” she asked. She peered down at me and recognized me to be the drunken
one who fell out of his chair at the discotheque the night before. Her eyes narrowed behind
her glittering spectacles, and she gathered herself up and declared that she would have to
call the headmaster if we weren't gone in a few minutes. She turned with a flourish of her
respectable skirt and flounced off across the field, calling the children sternly after her.
In the light of the morning, we saw ourselves and burst out laughing. We were covered in
muddy marks from head to toe, and our clothes were bedraggled and muddy as well. With
our hair tousled and scruffy and looking every bit like harbor trash, we rolled up our bed-
ding after dressing and began the journey back to the boat.
