started yelling to the other two that we were being attacked by hornets or bees or something
and hastily crawled out from under the hut. Paula screamed too and, not really knowing
what was going on, followed me out. Herman slept soundly on, not aware of the drama un-
folding a few feet away from him. We stood shivering outside in shock and wondered what
to do.
“I have had enough of this night to last me for a lifetime,” said the girl miserably. It started
to rain a few moments later, and we both yelled down at Herman to wake up, which he
surprisingly did, asking sleepily, “What's going on?”
“We have just been attacked by a nest of hornets or something and it's raining! We are get-
ting the hell out of here!” I yelled.
Herman crawled out from under the hut, muttering to all who would hear him. We gathered
up our possessions, fearful of another attack by the wasps, and made our way wearily up
the hill in the rain.
We were literally at the end of our tether when suddenly a school building came into view.
In the field was a large stadium which was covered by a tin roof. The roof was making
quite a din in the pouring rain, and we made a dash for this shelter. Before long we were
out of the rain and were drying ourselves off with the towels we had luckily packed. Ex-
hausted, we each chose a private spot to sleep and rolled out our bags, wriggled inside, and
fell silent again.
The rattling of the tin roof in the rain had a soothing effect on us all. Herman was the first
to embrace Morpheus, as usual, and at times his snoring could be heard above the rain.
I was relaxed and was reliving my day with humor and slight embarrassment when sud-
denly, softly, I felt a hand on my back. It was the girl, and I was quite surprised to find her
awake. “Are you asleep then?” she whispered sweetly.
“No, not quite, I was just thinking of today.”
“What about today?”
“You know, about me getting so wasted and making such an ass of myself and messing up
the evening and then you with that guy from the other boat. I was really jealous you know.”
“I know love, I could tell. As for getting so drunk, it happens to all of us; at least you
didn't get into a fight or anything. You were funny to watch; you should have seen your-
self; you were hysterical!”
“Was I?” I asked, grinning in the dark.
