“Yeah, this is terrible, of all nights for it to rain!” added Herman.
“Why don't we just take the bag and go back to the hotel, maybe we can sneak into one of
those Quonset huts or somewhere.” I suggested. I had sobered up somewhat from the walk
back to the beach though my head still throbbed.
We trooped off back to town as raindrops spattered on our heads. “We had better hurry, or
we are going to get soaked,” yelled Herman, trotting ahead.
We came upon a large, seemingly deserted bus parked off the road. Herman tried the door,
and to our delight, it was open. Looking about and finding the coast clear, we all clambered
aboard and made our way aft toward the back where there were some large comfortable
seats.
“This will do us perfectly,” exclaimed Paula, pleased to be out of the rain. I had sat down
and was trying out the large seat for size when suddenly we all froze. We heard the door
opening and a gruff voice was saying in a heavy Portuguese accent, “Who's there?”
The man had a torch, which he now shone towards the back of the bus and lighted up us
three damp adventurers. “What the hell you think you do here?” boomed the man. “This
bus she private property, why you inside now? What you do in my bus, you try steal it,
huh?”
“No senhor, we are not trying to steal the bus,” soothed Paula, “we are just hiding from the
rain; we mean no harm; we were going to leave as soon as it stopped raining.”
The man was obviously angry and afraid but believed the pretty young girl. “It stops rain-
ing now, you go now off my bus and no let me catch you here again, you hear?”
“Yes sir,” replied Herman, relieved at being let off so lightly. He scampered off the bus, and
Paula and I followed wordlessly.
Well out of earshot and in my best Portuguese accent, I yelled, “Now you'se get orff my
bus you hear me, jus' you get orff my bus, an' no come back you hear!” The others squealed
with laughter as we tripped up the street.
“Well, we still haven't found a place to sleep, and it has started to rain again,” said Paula
soon after in slight annoyance. The rain now started falling heavily again, and we started
running towards the Quonset huts near the hotel. We went up to one of them, and I tried the
door. It was locked. “Damn!” I said in frustration. We ran to the next one and the next; they
were all locked .We stood staring at the last one in dismay not knowing what to do, but I
suddenly saw the answer staring right at us.
