preventer : a strong length of rope attached to a boom to prevent accidental jibe
pulpit : a metal safety rail on the bow of boat.
pushpit : a metal safety rail on the stern of a boat
radar reflector : a metal (usually aluminum) device hoisted high aloft with good radar re-
flecting properties which is used for detection of and by boats out at sea
radio direction finder (RDF) : an electronic handheld device used for detecting radio sig-
nal beacons and used for navigation on boats and aircraft
ratlines : transverse ropes set across side stays/cables on large boats and used as steps aloft

rode : a type of anchor/rope/chain combination
rogue wave : a large wave (usually) arriving from an unexpected direction
rollers : devices used to roll flat wet fiberglass
rowlocks : fittings into which oars are fitted for rowing

running rigging : a type of rigging including ropes, sheets, and control lines
safety harness : a safety device with/without webbing and rope worn and attached to vari-
ous stations around a boat
saloon : the main part of a cabin down below
sampan : a classic East Asian sail or motor boat
