“'Ow about a cuppa then?” she asked, putting the kettle on.
“Sounds great. What I really want to do is go for a run. I haven't in a couple of days, and
I'm going through withdrawals.”
“You still on that lark?” she enquired, smiling mockingly up at me.
“Well, yes, I've been on 'that lark' for years; it's important to me to keep fit and for my
mental well-being as well. You should try it too young lady, although from where I stand it
certainly doesn't look as though you need it!”
I had a pair of shorts that were drying on the line which I now retrieved. I had on my run-
ning shoes.
“You wanna stay for some supper later?” she asked.
“That would be wonderful; I will tell you what I'm planning on doing soon with the boat.”
I took off up the road towards Bundaberg. It felt wonderful to be running again. It was
strange how addicted one could become, and there were definitely withdrawals when you
stopped for a couple of days (something to do with the release of endorphins I've read). I
had stopped running with weights in my hands, as I had noticed a pain creeping into my
knees lately and the extra weight was not helping.
Liza, bless her heart, was ironing and folding my clothes when I panted through the door-
way. “You are ironing my clothes! I haven't ironed my clothes since I was a kid at home,”
I laughed. “You really don't have to go to this trouble girl,” I said, putting my hand down
on hers.
“Well, I want to Jon; is that a good enough reason? Besides, they were all creased!” she
argued.
“What do you want as payment?” I said, slyly looking at her.
“We'll think o' sommat.” She said, smiling slightly, flashing a quick look at me.
“How about I take you to The Lighthouse for dinner tonight?” I suggested, tugging off my
shoes.
“Sounds good to me, but can you afford it? We can just as easily have dinner here.”
“No, I want to take you out to dinner if that's a good enough reason!” I made a face at her.
“Help yourself to a shower, please! I'll bring you in a towel; don't worry, I won't look!”
Later, she deposited me back to the boatyard with my pile of fresh smelling clothes and
bedding and promised to drop by at seven for dinner at The Lighthouse. I spent the next
