a little unnerving. After a while, I noticed that she had put her book down and was lying
in the afternoon glow of the setting sun. She looked wonderful in the golden light: her hair
lying about her now like a veil, a little smile played upon her young face as I trotted passed
her the umpteenth time. I had lost count at this stage. I was becoming self-conscious and
distracted.
It was still very hot and humid, and I finally just stopped running, I turned towards the sea
and plunged into the cool, green water, enjoying the refreshing cold of the salt water. My
thoughts were in turmoil. What was she up to? Was this her move? I had seen that she was
quite aggressive in her approach to most things; I think she was becoming impatient with
the resolution of the twin issue. I tried to analyze my thoughts for her and to evaluate what
the ramifications of a fling with Penny would entail. I knew that Gavin would be very up-
set. Penny and I were both free spirits, at least for the time being. We were both young and
moving in different worlds. What harm could possibly come from a little fling?
I turned and looked at her. She was lying back; her eyes were probably closed. I couldn't
tell. I slowly walked out of the water and quietly made my way over to where she was
lying. The shape of the tree was like a woman. It had a very shapely bole as it made its
way out of the beach; its smooth trunk snaked along the golden sand for a few feet and then
reached up into the sky but not high enough to prevent its fronds from ever losing contact
with the tranquil green water. The picture they both made was poetic to say the least.
I walked over slowly and stood at her feet. “Hi,” I said softly. She had been watching me
come over.
“Hi,” she returned, equally quiet, a smile lingered around her cute mouth. (A mouth I had
seen quite sulky too on occasions.) Her lips were full, young, and cherry red, her pert nose
dotted with freckles. She was very desirable.
“You and this tree make quite the poem,” I said to her.
“Me and the tree?” she asked.
“Yes, you are both very seductive!”
She laughed, “Meaning…?” she trailed off.
“Meaning that you are both very sexy, why just look at the shape of that tree trunk; it almost
looks like a mermaid lying there next to the real thing,” I tried to explain.
“Oh, stop it!” She sat up and slapped my leg playfully.
The sun had all but disappeared, just the tip was fading into the red horizon. “Hey, have
you ever seen the green flash?” I asked her.
