settled down there and was even taken by his new family to the big island of Hawaii when
they moved. I believe this is where he still remains to date.
There were several excellent stores in the neighborhood, and Gavin and I were able to stock
up on several months of provisions and dried goods. Jeri helped by driving us around to
other more specific locations for specialized items that were not available in a suburban
supermarket store: paraffin lanterns, polyester thread and needles for sewing, spare sail re-
pair cloth, spares for bilge pumps, fuses, etc. We took a drive across the Pali to Waikiki, and
the big Ala Wai yacht club, where I bought several charts of the South Pacific of exotic
places we were headed for. I had a stack of old charts from South Africa but found that
they were very outdated. This could be quite dangerous, especially identifying light houses
and their unique Morse flashes or radio beacons with their own Morse codes. It is quite in-
teresting to note as well the recent discovery of land masses that have “appeared” in recent
times not marked on older charts! One could imagine how dangerous that could be on a
dark and stormy night!
