canopy of trees. We followed his gaze and saw a crude platform high up in a very large
tree. “Pretty cool, huh?” he said enthusiastically.
“Yes, that's very nice, but we have to get to the airport as soon as possible, please!” I tried
reasoning with the lout.
“Hey guys, I'm sorry, but that's not my car. I can't take you to no airport, man,” he grinned
vacantly back at our stunned faces.
“Fuck you, you asshole!” exploded Susanne finally. She had had enough of this jerk and I
added my two cents worth by calling him a “damned irresponsible creep!”
I raced after Susanne who was marching furiously towards the van. Throwing open the
door, she leaned in and grabbed her bags and slammed the door closed so hard I thought
she'd break it. She set a very quick pace, and I raced after her, grabbing one of her bags.
She turned on me and vented her frustration, “Couldn't you tell that asshole was full of
shit! I've got about forty minutes to catch my flight! What am I going to fuckin' do?”
We had reached the main road by now, and perhaps it was the look in our faces, but the first
car that came speeding by suddenly stopped and backed up. The driver was a kindly look-
ing, young woman. “You look as though you are in a hurry to the airport!” she laughed.
“Oh God, am I so happy you stopped; I have got thirty minutes to get to Lihue airport,”
panted a red and flushed Susan.
“Well honey, you are in luck. I am on my way there right now to pick up my husband, jump
in quick.”
There was no need for me to go on to the airport with Susanne. I could see she was in good
hands. She agreed quickly when I said as much.
“Take care babe, I will write soon, and thank you so much for a wonderful time,” she yelled
as they sped off. I waved until they were out of sight and started hiking back to Hanalei.
Would you believe it, the lift that I finally got was from the same good woman that had
stopped for Susanne! She was now with her husband, and we had a good laugh about the
whole episode. I would get to know these two good Samaritans in my later time on Kauai,
and they would be amongst the group of angels that I was constantly surrounded by.
Feeling depressed and alone, I made Déjà vu ready for sea again, talking to Murphy as I
winched up the dinghy, “Well Murphs, it's just you and me again, old boy.”
“Merrrrrh,” he meowed knowingly.
