In-Depth Information
So began a sweet relationship that lasted all of six months. We corresponded by mail and
I would tell her of my time on Lanai, and she would tell me of her life in Colorado, where
she had a little house in Boulder against the huge Flatiron mountains of the great Rockies.
One day several weeks later, while I was doing something on-board, a local car pulled up
and out jumped Susanne! We ran to greet each other and embraced in delight; she looked
smashing in her bright pink vest, skimpy sawn off jeans with her long, shapely, brown
legs gracefully terminating in a pair of wild, white lace-up sandals, and a jaunty straw hat
cocked over her sunny face. She had arrived! We would take off for that week cruise to sail
to Molokai and Kauai.
She soon moved aboard Déjà vu with her little case of personal things as well as bottles of

“Well, don't get too used to it buddy boy, your turn tomorrow!” she retorted. Murphy added
his thoughts of excitement by meowing from the companionway; he was talking to us and
wanted to know where his food was.
Outside in the harbor we could hear the fishermen preparing their boats for the day at sea. I
asked my neighbor what he thought the weather would do, as regards to the wind, to which
he replied, smiling at Susanne, “Oh, she good for sail; where you go, bra?”
“Molokai and Kauai for about a week.”
“O-o-o no problem bra, weather plenty good for long time now. You like Kauai for sure.
Molokai quiet, but ono (beautiful), bra,” he said in his heavy local accent.
I began preparing Déjà vu for her sail and took in my clothesline, removed the spring moor-
ing lines, and brought the dinghy around the side to haul up on deck. Susanne took a keen
interest and helped while asking questions about the boat. Dee pulled up in a cloud of red
dust and came over grinning as always, her face charming with dimples, asking if we could
