see what it was like. More like a general store than a supermarket. There were the usual,
grubby, old, wooden shelves straight from a Hawaii of a hundred years ago, with canned
goods, packets of soup, racks of freshly baked, aromatic bread rolls, cakes, and cookies.
There were racks of old jars of candy, a newspaper and magazine rack, a freezer loaded
with frozen meat, packaged chicken, beef, and pork, and an ancient fan revolved lazily
overhead. There were sections allocated to general hardware items as well as children's
toys and even general clothing. I was amused to see an old-fashioned, glass showcase with
one or two wedding dresses on display and hopelessly outdated. There was a section for
fresh produce, and it was this that I had come to stock up on. I would be back for that later.
I smiled at the elderly, Filipino lady at the only check-out till, “I will be back again soon.”
As I stepped out into the morning sun, I almost bumped into Dee, the ice lady from the
harbor. “Hi Dee, remember me?”
“Hello, yes of course I do! Jonathan, right?” She slapped my arm playfully. “What are you
doing up in town, looking for the girls?”
“I wish. No, I needed to buy some groceries. In fact, I was just thinking how much I'd love
to live here.”
“Really?” she continued to beam at me, her beautiful, white teeth glinting in the sun. Her
aura of black, fluffy hair floated about her olive skinned face. She was gorgeous and very
friendly. She was happily married too, I had to remind myself.
“How did you get here?” she asked.
“By boat,” I teased.
“Hah,” she laughed, “Very funny Jonathan. Did you walk?”
“Yes, it took me hours, but it was worth it; it's so beautiful. I kept looking back over the
ocean. What a view!”
“I am going down to the harbor later to clean up our boat. I think Ken and I may go out
fishing on the weekend. Do you want a lift back down?”
“I couldn't think of anyone else I would rather ask!”
She smiled and made as if to slap me again and said, “I will meet you here at twelve o'
clock. Is that OK?”
“That's perfect Dee; thanks very much, I would really appreciate that.”
