“Really? Well, maybe you might like to stay on-board her boat?” I suggested, not being
facetious at all but giving myself a way out and offering for Gavin to be more independent.
“She actually lives in town, and I bet she won't mind a bit if I stay on-board. That's actually
a very good idea. I will phone later this morning. You should see her; she's quite a scroff,
long, wheat-colored plaits in her hair and a bloody nice body. She's a bit older than me but
still very sexy!”
I could sense a change in the air, and it was healthy. It was time; it was as it should be.
Gavin went off to the public telephone outside the restroom to battle with the noise of the
jets and to phone Felicity about staying aboard. I went to the boatyard to tell John Anderton
of my decision. We were squared away with wages from the previous week, and I thanked
him profusely for all the work and kindness he showed us. “Hey, I'm sorry to see you guys
go; you did a terrific job. My family and I are also heading off at the end of this month;
we're heading to New Zealand via the usual South Pacific island route - Palmyra, Tonga,
Fiji and so on - and maybe our paths will cross again. Take care and all the best to you
guys.”
I went and said my goodbyes to Slim and the guys at the workshop and headed back to
where Gavin was on the phone. He was talking excitedly and loudly over the phone. He
looked quite positive about the conversation, and I knew he would be moving off the boat
soon. Yes, there was a pang of regret. I would miss him; he had been a constant companion
for a long time and sailing alone without him would be a lot harder. I didn't know what he
would do or where he would go, but I knew we both had our paths to take and who really
knew what the future held?
Gavin replaced the receiver. He was grinning broadly. “Well, she says it's cool to stay on-
board, and I can start work whenever I like!”
“Well, that's perfect then. Hey, I'd like to take the Yellow Lemon, or you could come with
me to the supermarket to load up on provisions for the trip to Lanai?”
“Gaanders,” he said, realizing that soon I would be sailing off alone to a new island. I could
see a moment of hesitation in his eyes.
“I will let you know all about Lanai, perhaps when you are finished here with that boat you
might come over and check it out. You will be glad to get away from this place then.”
“Yeah, I'm sure I will,” he agreed.
Later that morning when I had packed away all the provisions, oiled the eggs, washed and
stowed all the fresh veggies, and fed the kitten Murphy again, I rowed over to Liz to say
goodbye. I remained seated in the dinghy as I told her of my decision.
