In-Depth Information
The philosophy of cruising, for me, has germinated into an exacting art of pitting one's self
against the mighty oceans and their weather and in taking comfort from these dangers with
the knowledge that one's boat is well-founded, stout, sea-proven, and capable: of bringing
goodwill and hope and knowledge to the inhabitants of distant and exotic places; of the
freedom and thrill of sailing a little vessel and navigating her to one's destination in the
middle of a heaving sea; of living in and experiencing some of the last natural wonders on
the planet, many that have not changed for the last several million years;
and to witness,
to appreciate, to marvel, and to leave.
There is a saying that sailing is like sitting under a cold shower tearing up one hundred
dollar bills. Yes, it can be tremendous hardship, but it is that and more! So much more!
The ocean is a wonderful teacher imparting lessons such as humility, preparedness, appre-
ciation, wonder, bravery, patience, silence, fitness, self-confidence, and accomplishment.
