was wrong of me to have allowed this to happen, but you are too cute!” She leaned over
and pulled my cap over my eyes, smiling mischievously.
I lifted up her hand and kissed it, “Not half as cute as you, Liz,” I said quietly, looking into
her face.
“You have never seen my boat inside. Would you like to see it?” she asked, deftly changing
the subject.
“I would, I would.” I said, following her down below. It was quite a bit smaller that Déjà
vu, but very charming, very orderly, and very clean. Exactly as I thought it would be, just
like her owner in fact. “She's lovely, shipshape, and Bristol fashion actually.”
I looked at her photographs on the bulkhead. There were the usual family shots and some
of the boat sailing and some of her dog. There was one of a strange man smiling with a
long, greyish pony tail. “I guess that is Al?”
“That is Al,” was all she said.
“Well, I best be getting back to my porthole project,” I turned quickly to leave.
“Jon,” she said, taking my hand in hers, “I have a lot of feelings for you. I am as confused
about all this as you; it's all been so sudden. Please try to understand my side of this.”
“I am trying, Liz, but I can see a heartache coming my way,” I bent over and kissed her on
the mouth and, turning away, climbed into my dinghy and rowed directly back to Déjà vu.
Several days later Liz dropped by on her way back to her boat and asked if we would like
to go to the big Aloha Sports Stadium on Sunday morning to see the big public yard sales,
or swap meets, they held every week. “We'll have to forfeit breakfast at the AA though
guys and will have to use your car if it's OK with you, Gavin?”
“Yes, that's fine as long as we all chip in for petrol,” he replied.
“It's really cool; you'll love it, and there are so many things to buy. Lots of used tools and
diving equipment, army and navy surplus, you name it,” Liz said, her enthusiasm catching.
At around seven am the next morning Liz patted the hull, “Hey guys, rise and shine; it's a
gorgeous day, and we've got a yard sale to go to!”
“Morning girl, you're out and about early aren't you? Time
for a quick coffee? Oh hi
Zephyr, also going yardsale-ing today, boy?”
“Sure, why not Jon, I figured you'd want to get there pretty early though, before all the
good stuff is sold.”
