I suddenly recalled his ugly maneuver with the knife that night, and a flash of anger came
over me, “No, fuck you, you fucking trash bag; you are the one who fucking pulled a knife
on me, or have you forgotten? You're damn lucky I didn't sink your stupid contraption of
a fuckin' boat or pull a gun on you in defense, arsehole! I chose to ignore it, OK!”
I stared down at him shaking with anger. He stood there glowering at me. I think he was
quite shocked that I had stood up to him, and he was not sure what to say. He continued to
glare malevolently at me, his narrowed eyes glinting with venom and hatred. He was big
enough to rip me apart if he wanted to, instead he said, “You jus' leave Liz alone, you hear.
Her boyfriend is comin' back from the mainland soon; he'll sort you out, little fuck.” With
that he pushed off, sat down in a hurry, and motored off to the shore.
It felt as if someone had slapped me hard through the face. I sat down staring at the retreat-
ing dinghy, and my mind went numb. I felt utterly spent and empty. So Liz had a boyfriend,
and he was coming back for her. I didn't care a brass tack for that thug Steve and his threats
now; I was shaken by the news and could not even continue with the porthole project. I had
to know the truth. I had to go to Liz, tell her my feelings, as if she didn't already know, and
get it out of her about her boyfriend returning from the mainland.
I washed my hands and lit a cigarette to calm my nerves. I made a cup of instant coffee
and sat outside reflecting on what had happened. It was all too obvious that Steve was furi-
ous with me for arriving on the scene and moving in on Liz. He was as mad as a snake. I
thought about what I would say to Liz and saw her dinghy peeping out from the back of her
boat. She was home from shopping so I jumped down in my dinghy and rowed off towards
her boat.
Pulling up alongside, I tapped lightly on her boat, “Ahoy there, Liz?” Zephyr came bound-
ing up, wagging his little tail in greeting, followed shortly by his lovely mistress, “Hi Jon,
come aboard; looks like you had a visitor.” She grinned wickedly. “How was it?”
I melted when I saw her.
“Oh, he was all pissed off about his stupid dinghy. He doesn't know it was me but
threatened me again, said he would find out sooner or later. I don't really give a damn.
What I really came to see you about was something he said.”
“I think I know, Jon; it's about Al on the mainland, isn't it?” she said instinctively.
“Yes, Liz. I don't think you realize how much I have fallen for you, girl.”
“Well, Jon, if it's any consolation, I really like you as well. I can't help my feelings, and yes
I do have a boyfriend but do not know how all that is going to turn out. I needed a friend
too, as he has been gone some time now and will be gone for a few months yet. I guess it
