8.9.5 The Filter Prototype Manufactured by the Second
Micromachine Tool Prototype
To test the second micromachine tool prototype and examine the microfilter
characteristics, we have made a microfilter prototype using the second microma-
chine tool prototype. A microfilter has one drum containing 12 columns with ten
microrings in each column. The internal diameter of each microring is 0.8 mm, and
the external diameter is 1.3 mm. The height of each microring is approximately
0.6 mm. (Fig. 8.43 ).
8.9.6 Case Study
We performed an experiment to study the microfilter's behavior. It consisted of
measuring the flow rate at three different pressures using pure water. The results
obtained were compared with theoretical results, calculated by software. The final
results are shown in Table 8.7 and Fig. 8.44 .
We have begun investigating a new approach to micromechanical device fabri-
cation, proposed in [ 1 ]. The approach assumes the production of microequipment
(micromachine tools and micromanipulators) as sequential generations. Overall
sizes of future generations of microequipment must be smaller than the overall
sizes of the previous generations. To date, we have made two prototypes of
micromachine tools of the first generation.
We have worked out some other elements needed for microfactory creation.
