Three important components of gear train backlash are:

1. The space between the gear teeth at the operating pitch circle (Fig. 8.25 );
2. The space between the gear shaft and the gear hold (Fig. 8.26 ); and
3. The deformation of the console gear shaft (Fig. 8.27 ).

In the first case, to define the backlash between the gear teeth, we use the
equation:
