school uniforms, but after traveling behind the coal fired steam engines for the trip my white
shirts were distinctly grey, particularly the collars, covered in soot. Four of the big five still
ran wild outside the Kruger Park. Hippos would roam into Komatipoort at night and jump into
backyard swimming pools with the dawn, causing a problem in extraction, usually after having
to shoot them. Hippos on the road at night would sometimes be involved in accidents. The
Terrible Twelve were and are always a risk to life and limb in Southern Africa.
Terrible Twelve:
Based on my experience, there are twelve animals in Southern Africa that I refer to as the
Terrible Twelve. Hunters usually referred to the Big Five, because they were dangerous game
and made good trophies, namely the lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard. Interestingly,
despite hunting the Big Five but not successfully kudu (see Green Hills of Africa),
Hemmingway only considered there to be three sports: bull fighting, car racing, and
mountaineering.
