Indeed, I intensely dislike them and my guardian angels worked overtime protecting me a
numbers of times from our encounters in the wilds—just as they have protected me from lion,
elephants, rhino, leopard, hippo, crocodiles, bears, and even lowly animals like warthogs.
Africa is ominous. You will, to some degree, get injured by something or some animal, get sick
or be delayed, and one needs to mentally prepare for it.
My clothes and boots for tomorrow are laid out ready to go. I bought some Courteney Selous
boots which will serve me well in Zimbabwe since they are made there, as are my Tag tough
cotton shirts and pants. I brought along my fly fishing windbreaker that can also function
reasonably well with some light rain. Rain is very unlikely but it is winter and mornings before
sunrise are cold. I bought a couple of hats, one baseball style, one Beau Geste, and a more
wide brimmed hat for when it is very hot and sunny.
The problem with wide brimmed hats is they can catch in thorn bushes and they can get
irritating if they catch on things when you are hiking. However, they also protect your face
from getting ripped apart by “wait-a-bit” buffalo horn thorns. I have one I bought in West
Yellowstone this summer at Eagle's Shop for a day of fishing with Bob Jacklin in Yellowstone
and hiking Grand Tetons and Glacier Park. It allows for aeration, is relatively waterproof and
gives good sun protection for my fair Scandinavian skin and metabolism that is more suited for
rowing across storm ravaged North Atlantic oceans than walking the African Bushveld (I have
Viking blood heritage).
I am all set for tomorrow and it is time to say good night to my family. Tomorrow morning I
will be picked up and taken to the airport where I will join Bruce Lytle for this adventure in
the raw African wilds as we explore the seeds of life's early human imperatives and how they
may still influence the way our current societies behave, including towards wild animals we
share our space ship with, and what our future holds. To paraphrase Shakespeare from Hamlet,
if ye know the seeds of time, which will grow and which will not, speak ye to me.

Come to think of it, is not President Obama the preeminent modern hunter-gatherer? He
