Larry Ellison's 115 foot trimaran BMW Oracle at Americas Cup Start in Valencia
I still with my crew and trimaran Larus Roc (Larus = Seagull, Roc the legendary bird with
16 pace wing span, sometimes incorrectly spelled “Laurus,” that plucked up Sinbad the Sailor)
hold the Marion to Bermuda record from 2005 of some 60 hours, despite it being a race with
poor winds and little in the way of water or resources. The four weather computer models
before the race were not congruent, nor were Commanders weather, so after scanning the navy
generated graphs of water temperatures showing the Gulf Stream, it was clear there was a long
warm water eddy stretching north of Bermuda that could be followed with likely better winds,
which turned out to be the case. In one 24 hour period we covered over 360 nm but after that
there was no or little wind.
