solar, wind, wave, algae, and food sources such as corn. We in the USA use some 18 to 20
million barrels a day of oil, out of a total of some 90 million used in the world per day. But,
oil production in the USA in the next several years till 2018 is projected to grow by 30% to
the point that it could exceed Saudi Arabia while OPEC will only increase about 5%. With the
cost - energy equivalents ratio of about six to one for natural gas versus oil, we have about 45
billion barrels of oil equivalents now in new found natural gas fracking if it can be safely
extracted and without release of methane, one of the worst potential global warming gases, a
huge potential source of energy independence for the USA. Currently the USA is estimated to
have 300 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and uses about 30 trillion yearly. Huge reserves of
over 65 trillion cubic feet have been found in both Zimbabwe and Mozambique that may
become a clean energy source for Southern Africa. Indeed, all life is a cascade of an algorithm
of energy flow from the Big Bang onwards. At least Steve Jobs tried to standardize chargers,
out of a concern for his customers' convenience and to protect the environment. Just yesterday
he announced that he was stepping down as CEO for Apple; a sad turn of events. He is
certainly a man that has contributed tremendously to innovation and computers over the years,
even if this was, as has been reported, at the expense of high expectations of his employees. I
wish him all the best, dealing obviously with his liver transplant and pancreatic cancer. I was
talking to a billionaire just a week ago who said he had been traveling on a plane in first class
and sitting next to Steve Jobs. Steve refused the plane dinner, but opened little Ziploc bags
with different food items that he ate. He wondered why he seemed to have this strange diet. It
was because Steve Jobs couldn't eat and digest certain foods and had to be very careful about
what he ate because of his surgery and lack of enzymes to breakdown his food from the
pancreatectomy. Steve Jobs, one of the most successful CEOs, has changed society. His drive
for perfection, innovation, eye for design, customer concern, and leadership will be difficult to
emulate for decades. I think because he concentrated so much on customer ease of use, in a
sense a moral imperative, with empathy this will add to his stature, and qualify him as a great
leader. Indeed, Larry Ellison once commented Jobs was not driven by financial reward, rare
for modern CEOs. A year ago I spent a fascinating time watching and writing about Larry
Ellison's organization of his Americas Cup Challenge in Valencia and his win with the 115
foot BMW Oracle trimarans.
He is certainly a driven leader with different aspirations. Having raced 60 foot trimarans for
a number of years, the experience was particularly exciting.
