I was once standing in the foyer of the Intercontinental Hotel in Cleveland with my Houston
mentor Michael DeBakey, the preeminent surgeon-politician of the Twentieth century who
helped draft the Medicare plans with Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, talking about
healthcare and people. We were continuing a discussion how to align physicians towards
better care of patients when Stephen Hawking, who was in Cleveland for a talk at Severance
Hall, drove up in his wheelchair and our conversation changed to more the cosmos. Recently,
on his 70 birthday, Hawking was quoted as saying that he did not believe that mankind, as a
race, would still be here in 1000 years: “It is possible that the human race could become
extinct, but it is not inevitable. I think it is almost certain that a disaster such as nuclear war or
global warming will befall the Earth within a thousand years.”
Is man's reign, as in the 1969 song by Zagar and Evans suggested, through?
For what, he never knew. Now man's reign is through.
But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight.
So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday.
