To capture the water, Mozambique plans to build another big dam on the Zambezi river
(Mphanda Nkuwa Dam, 1,500 MW, the $3.2 billion cost financed by the China Export -
Import Bank). During a period of political weakness in Egypt, Ethiopia is planning to build a
giant dam, Grand Renaissance Dam (6,000 MW), on the Blue Nile River, throwing into
disarray the colonial imposed agreement on how the Nile River's water should be allocated as
a resource. Ethiopia argues it is unfairly treated and most of the water comes from Ethiopia.
Similar problems are occurring over the water from the Kavango River stretching across the
western side of Southern Africa.
