However, at the Fish River the Nguni herders came into contact with the white settlers in
1788 and the Griquas, the genetic remnants of the earlier Khoi Khoi that had interbred with
Dutch Afrikaner settlers.
Among the Swazis and AmaTonga, the situation was also different. W. C. Baldwin was one
of the early British hunters in Zululand and documented a huge number of animals in the area
and also the presence of Zulus ruled by the Zulu king. He later trekked up to Swaziland and
through the area of AmaTonga. The Swazis paid homage to the Zulus, a much bigger tribe, and
often hid in the mountains from the Zulus when attacked. Even when growing up among the
Swazi they still wore wooden pegs in their ears to show their subjugation to the Zulu kingdom.
In their turn, the Swazi's drove the local “Suthus” northwards giving the name Usuthe to the
bordering river between Swaziland and Zululand. This river was the Pongola that becomes the
Maputo, after which the city of Maputo is named in Mozambique, formerly called Lorenzo
Marques.
The AmaTonga were fairly unique living in the area northeast of Swaziland and up towards
the area between the Komati and Crocodile Rivers and eastwards to Lorenzo Marques at
