commercially ”viable” farms, the government encouraged families to sell farms within the
families at a reasonable price to once again restore farms to larger concerns which were more
economically viable. One of my other cousins bought up old family farms, including my
father's near Nydala, an Abbey that dates back to 1147 where my forefathers are buried, to
make them more viable.

The stress of farming in South Africa is due to both political pressures for whites to move
off farms and to sell them to the government and because of increasing violence toward
farmers. The number of South African farmers killed far exceeds those in Rhodesia, now
Zimbabwe, although the history of those farming areas is quite long. In Zimbabwe, there are
now officially no privately owned farms and all 5,000 have reverted to the state and its
political elite, although 300 white farmers still remain but only ten on their farms and just after
we left in September another farmer was killed on his farm. More drastically the peak white
