bones and joint. He spent about 3 months recovering, mostly because of terrible sepsis that set
into the wound, but eventually healed and he was left with a residual stiff elbow. He was left
handed so he was still able to handle a rifle. He continued to work as a professional hunter
until becoming a photography guide later in his career. Harry Selby, one of Africa's most
famous guides/PHs, who was a partner with Soren, followed up the lions tracks but never
found it. [Harry Selby was made famous for being Robert Ruark's PH in East Africa and also
being mentored by Philip Percival, who was Hemingway's PH and a guide for Teddy
Roosevelt. Percival was also a model, apart from Colonel Patterson, for Hemingway's topic
“The Short Life of Francis Macomber,” in which the PH carried a Gibbs .505. These PHs,
together with John Sutton, worked for Ker and Downey the East Africa outfitters and,
according to J Douglas Johnston, Sutton was given the job of arranging film shoots and actors
comfort in movies like Mogambo, Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, The Color Purple, Gorillas in
the Mist, Out of Africa. Ruark wrote his topic “Something of Value” on his farm. A new
edition has just been issued with background information by Harry Selby. Sutton is quoted as
saying “No question hunting has changed a great deal, even since the days of Ruark and
Hemingway. We used to hunt very hard and enjoyed it. It was an experience. Pulling the trigger
was just the finale; the rest of it - the outdoor life, camping under canvas, the game viewing
and tracking, the stimulation was something you could really talk about. We were very close to
the earth and all the feelings that go with it. We understood the animals. It was a fascinating
life.” Elegantly summarized! Hopefully that kind of experience is not entirely gone,
experiencing raw Africa, and at least in the Kruger Park and other Southern African reserves,
an attempt has been made to bring back some of that experience in walking or hiking safaris.
There is nothing quite like walking among African animals and not knowing what to expect
next. Other films that Ker and Downey arranged included The Francis Macomber Affair, King
Solomon's Mines, Hatari, Call me Bwana, Ashanti, Quest for Fire, The Constant Gardener and
The Missionary.] I also had a young female patient who was out camping in a sleeping bag
under the stars in Botswana when a lioness bit her in gluteus Maximus (butt) and started
dragging her off. Her screaming woke the rest of the camp up and they pelted the lioness with
stones and sticks and the lioness then ran off.
