despite appearances. We stopped at a stream in the Lamar Valley near the big boulder left by a
glacier and watched a grizzly foraging in the ponds right next to the stream. Some fellows on a
motor bike next to us were somewhat nervous over the bear being so close, torn between the
spectacle and the danger, ready to jump into our SUV. We watched the bear for a while and
then headed for the east end of the valley road after taking photographs from our car. On our
return back on the road, headed towards Mammoth Springs, we stopped again briefly to look at
the bear and by this time there were some 20 to 30 vehicles and people hanging out and
walking around photographing the bear. The most ridiculous situation was these two young
'hot shots' with cell phone cameras that walked out to the spring and were standing within just
10 yards of water separating them from the bear trying to photograph this bear. People were
warning them to come back but they ignored the advice. I moved the car and rolled down the
window and had my camera with a big telephoto lens ready just in case the idiots got attacked
by the bear, which would have happened in seconds. These grizzly bears can cover about 45
feet in one second. We watched a sow and cubs chasing elk at quite a speed in the Grand
Tetons.

Fortunately, eventually they were convinced to leave the bear alone. I would, of course,
helped out if something happened.
